Following Your Dreams by volunteering:  Volunteering in Costa Rica and in Your Own Backyard

 Christy Conk

President, Friends of Lake Louisa State Park, Inc.

Clermont, Florida

Point and shoot (2)

Since I was a child I have always been drawn to nature and animals.  I began volunteering for the local animal shelter in Lake City, Florida when I was 12 years old, did road clean ups with my Dad, and also helped him put up Eastern Bluebird nest boxes in Suwannee and Columbia County, Florida.

As a volunteer for Lake Louisa State Park I have the opportunity to educate guests about the importance of wildlife and how they can aid in the efforts to conserve their native Florida.  Since I was a child it was a dream of mine to make a difference in the lives of animals within the rainforest areas of Central and South America.  In the summer of 2013 my dream of working with wild macaws came true thanks to the ARA Project.

While volunteering with the ARA Project I had the opportunity to work alongside a group of dedicated people conserving scarlet and great green macaw populations in Costa Rica.  After initially caring for over 150 macaws in the breeding facility I traveled to Manzanillo, the release site for great green macaws.  From there I travelled to Punta Islita, the location of the release site for scarlet macaws as well as the new site of the breeding facility.  I observed both wild and breeding birds, helped with relocations, made many diets, and learned more than I could ever imagine from the birds as well as the people who dedicate their lives to saving them.

Please join us for our Speaker Series on Friday, July 25th at 7:00pm to learn about my great adventure and volunteer opportunities in Costa Rica and at Lake Louisa State Park.  Space is limited so please RSVP by calling 352-394-3969.
